Yesterday I decided on a domain name and as much as I liked having our personal site as a freebie, I had to get rid of the free service too, I'll cover more of that portion in another blog.
First off, back in the day I used to buy a domain name here, there, and every where, but then I couldn't keep track of them. Now I purchase my domains at Godaddy and if I'm not using them to host my site, I redirect my domain name. Notice, I said that I redirect it, not transfer it. This way all my domains are in one spot and managable from there. Godaddy's prices are great, but don't get confussed when you check out with all the bells and whistles that are options for you to purchase.
Now, deciding on a domain name has always been a bit hard for me. You want to keep it short, rememberable, and it has to do with you and/or your site. I chose DivaB-Dogs, because people know me as DivaB and the site is about dogs. I may be shooting myself in the foot by narrowing my niche to Dogs rather than pets, but the key here is to just start moving forward. Anything and everything can be tweeked and changed later on. I was also concerned about the DivaB being too "girly" and men thinking they could not participate, and I hope that doesn't happen, because we need the best of both worlds and the differences to make things interesting.
Keep in mind that on the internet, nothing is in stone. Domain names can be changed, titles can be changed, pages added, pictures added or deleted....you get the picture, right? Again I'll mention that you just need to start moving forward. Mistakes are great, as long as you use them as a learning tool.
Now when you purchase a domain name from else where, you have to have at least two dns addresses to forward it too. I opened two windows and worked back and forth between my freewebs account and godaddy. I remember the first time I ever did this and how frustrated I was, and I had to call customer service several times until I got a hold of someone who talked in layman terms and not "computer language" which I just don't follow, and that language makes my eyes glaze over and a terrible ringing noise in my head and ears start up. I was able to accomplish on my very own last night, and was very proud of myself!! Yey me!
So with that done, we now have a new domain name and I'm plunging forward.
To your success;
DivaB
