Here is a cheap and very easy way to make a whelping box. We use storage containers, such as the 73 qt packer type packers for our tiny toys and a larger packer for our bigger breeds. We then cut a door out of one end about 5.5" from the bottom so that there is a 5.5" ledge. The door is about 5" wide and goes clear to the top. Keep this cut out piece.
Once the door is cut out, we then take small pieces of wood and line them through the packer on the bottom edge and the two sides. (you would need 6 pieces all together because you have them on the inside and outside of the packer, you are framing the door opening). Then your piece that you cut out will slide down in when you need to shut off the opening for some reason.
Now take the lid of the packer and drill 1" holes through out the top. This is for circulation and/or breathing in case you have to shut off the door.
Presto, easy whelping boxes that stack inside one another for easy storage when not in use. Super simple, the whelping mothers love them, and so do the puppies! (We have even used for cats and their kittens.)
To your success;
